Restorative Nursing: Bowel and Bladder for the CNA

Urinary and bowel incontinence is a serious problem that affects the physical and mental health of many residents. It is a treatable symptom of an underlying condition. The appropriate management of incontinence results in a reduction of incontinent episodes to complete continence. Unfortunately, many residents are not adequately assessed and treated for urinary and bowel incontinence, which leads to a decrease in a resident’s quality of life.

To improve residents’ quality of life and well-being, it is important for you to understand your role in tracking bowel and bladder incontinence related to restorative nursing care. In this course, you will learn factors that affect the bowel and bladder, the assessment process used to determine appropriate bowel and bladder programs, and the benefits of an effective program. Finally, you will learn how to follow a restorative bowel and bladder program to manage or reduce incontinence.

The goal of this course is to provide direct care workers in post-acute care settings with an overview of bowel and bladder restorative nursing programs.
