Addressing Tobacco Use in the Behavioral Health Population

Tobacco use exerts a heavy toll on the health of persons with behavioral health disorders. It can lead to serious illnesses that impact their quality of life and life expectancy. This has become even more urgent with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, as COVID-19 can have long term negative effects on the respiratory system and mental health. In your practice, you will likely encounter people with behavioral health disorders that are being told to quit smoking by health professionals or themselves desire to quit smoking. As a behavioral health professional, you have an opportunity to intervene and work to prevent illnesses and deaths from tobacco use, particularly in light of COVID-19 being a potential exacerbating factor. The goal of this course is to provide addiction, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, psychology, and social work professionals working in the health and human services setting with education regarding tobacco use and interventions for tobacco use in the behavioral health population.
