Electrical Safety in the Home

The majority of American people have incorporated the use of electricity into daily life. It provides light, heat, cool air, entertainment, even transportation, and those are just a few of its uses. However, it is easy to take for granted the dangers associated with electricity. Electrical accidents can result in fires, injuries, or even death. In fact, in 2011, almost 50,000 house fires involved electrical failure or malfunction resulting in over 400 deaths and over 1500 injuries (Hall, 2013). In 2009, 100 people died from electrocution from the use of home consumer products (Hnatov, 2012). As you can see, clients must take measures within the home to prevent electrical fires and injuries. It is your responsibility as a home care worker to ensure your clients health and safety, including safety from electrical injuries. While in a clients home, you should be on the lookout for electrical hazards and educate clients and their caregivers on the steps they can take to prevent electrical accidents. In this course, you will learn the effects of electricity on the human body, common electrical hazards present in the home, and measures to take to reduce these hazards. *Additionally, this course is offered in Spanish
